Overview

As one of the few sports that can be played throughout the lifespan, hockey boasts players as young as five, through to veterans of 81 years of age. At the junior level both club and schools hockey embrace modified programs such as 'Minkey' and 'Let's Play Hockey'. These offer an excellent player pathway to children and adolescents to learn and enjoy hockey and fulfil their potential in the game.

Hockey is played Australia-wide from the inner sanctums of private school hockey competitions to club hockey in the depths of regional Australia and of course through to our most elite national competitions. Juniors usually grow up learning the game on grass hockey fields, however as synthetic surfaces become more and more prevalent, their use becomes more common among lower and younger grades.

Hockey Australia has ~94,000 registered players from 850 hockey clubs across the nation. In addition to players registered with clubs, hockey is played extensively through Australian schools (~25% of all schools) and at a recreational level, estimating current participation at approximately 760,000.
